MOST
of the accounts of this Welsh marcher
lord family are based on a fictitious
genealogy compiled & created by Sir Edward Stradling
(1529 - 1609) between 1561 and 1566.
He concocted a fantasy pedigree that showed
his ancestors to have arrived with the Danes, and also
a tale of a 'Sir William de Easterling'
who accompanied the Norman knight fitz-Hamo
into Glamorgan and who received as his reward
the castle of St. Donat's, which was the family seat for many generations.
The
actual origins of the family are set
forth in these pages, and while perhaps not
as romantic, are certainly just as interesting. The true account
of the origins of this family are to be found in The Rise of the
Stradlings of St. Donat's by Ralph A. Griffiths,
in " Conquerors and Conquered in Medieval Wales," NY: St. Martin's, [1994],
pp. 30-48. This well researched and interesting article
first appeared in the journal " Morgannwg:
Transactions of the Glamorgan History Society", vol. VIII [1963],
pp. 15-47.
Further
information on the expedition of fitz-Hamo
into Wales can be found in another
article by Mr. Griffiths, The Norman
Conquest and the Twelve Knights of Glamorgan
, op. cit., pp. 19 - 29, which was first
published in "Glamorgan Historian," vol. III;
[1966], pp. 153-169.
Some
further information on the Stradling family has been culled
from the Dictionary of National Biography.
